Sevin Fortier’s work explores the fragile and fleeting nature of human consciousness and is overlaid with facets of complex emotions such as shame and loneliness.
Fortier’s work is imbued with an uncomfortable tension and the sensation of words left unsaid. The viewer is invited to enter an enigmatic otherworld to explore the relationships between human figures and mysterious ‘other’ beings. Viewers may recognise their own feelings of discomfort and find meaning in the work through the lens of their own emotional experience.
The pieces presented here are a part of Fortier’s recent attempts to interpret her dread of existence - to interrogate the human urge to find meaning. Her practice is intuitive and instinct-led in a way that reflects what she calls ‘the terror and regret’ of mortality.
Fortier graduated from the University of the West of England with a BA in Illustration (2006) and has been an award winning illustrator and animator, with clients ranging from Ikea to Oxford University.
She is also known as the creator behind the jewellery brand, Kerchung!, Karen Cheung.
